Delgado’s first-ever Region XXIII Tournament host weekend proved to be a good one. The Dolphins defeated Baton Rouge Community College 8-6 on Sunday afternoon to claim the Region XXIII Championship.
Kevin Williams’ two-run double in the second inning jump started the Dolphins and overtook Baton Rouge’s initial 1-0 lead, scoring James Davis, who had also reached on a double and Nate Fury, who had reached base with a walk.
Williams’ single in the fourth would also score Davis, who had reached on a second double. Baton Rouge would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth with an two-RBI single. Daniel Brockhoeft answered in the bottom of the inning with a two run homerun, scoring Alex Prestenbach to take a 5-4 lead.
Delgado sealed their run-column in the sixth, scoring three runs on four hits (including a homer by Scott Fabre) and a Baton Rouge error. Baton Rouge threatened in the eighth inning, scoring two runs following a single and double.
Lyndon Eusea picked up the win in relief of starter Stone Speer.
With the win, Delgado captures the 2011 Region XXIII Championship, along with the honor of hosting next weekend’s South Central District tournament at Kirsch-Rooney, featuring Eastern Oklahoma (Region II Champion) and Jefferson College (Region XVI Champion) and Delgado. The winner of the tournament will advance to the NJCAA Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Delgado Head Coach Joe Scheuermann was also named Region XXIII Coach of the Year following Sunday’s championship.
This year’s championship marks the Dolphins’ fourth Region XXIII title over the past five seasons, the last being in 2010 over Meridian Community College.
