Delgado’s 2011 season came to an abrupt end Sunday afternoon in an extra-inning, 4-3 loss to Jefferson College (Missouri) in the Championship game of the South Central District Tournament.
In front of a near capacity crowd, Delgado took an early 2-0 lead in the third following a lead-off double by Sean McMullen, who scored following Chad Gough-Fortenberry’s RBI-single. Alex Prestenback reached base on a Jefferson error, which also scored Scott Fabre, who had reached on a walk. Prestenback would also boost the Dolphin lead to three following a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning.
Jefferson posted their first run in the sixth inning on Sage Boehner’s RBI single. Back to back doubles in the bottom of the eighth prompted the Delgado demise when two Jefferson runs crossed the plate to make it a 3-3. The game would carry over into extra innings before Nathan Goro’s walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth scored Boener, who had reached on a lead-off triple. With the win, Jefferson College advances to the Junior College World Series.
Nate Fury picked up the loss for the Dolphins in relief of starter Lyndon Eusea, who allowed one run while walking two and striking out eleven Viking batters.
Delgado closes their 2011 campaign with a 42-17 record, the second most successful record in program history.
